Situations in SAP operations and SAP projects where my experience can be put to use straight away.

  • The system is slow and the cause is unclear

    Performance analysis across application, database and operating system: workload, SQL traces, memory, CPU and I/O.

  • SAP HANA is running out of memory

    Analysis of memory and resource consumption; partitioning and archiving of large tables.

  • An error keeps coming back and internal analysis has run out of options

    3rd-level troubleshooting across the boundaries of SAP, database and operating system.

  • A migration to SAP HANA or S/4HANA is due

    Planning and execution with DMO, including Unicode conversion where needed – starting from Oracle or DB2.

  • An upgrade or patch has to be scheduled

    Release upgrades, enhancement packages and support packages, as well as HANA patches and upgrades.

  • Systems need to be copied or moved to a new platform

    Homogeneous and heterogeneous system copies, refreshes and OS/DB migrations.

  • Business data has to move into the new system

    Data model analysis, transformation and migration – for example from SAP ECC to S/4HANA.

From the database to the ABAP code

I have been working with SAP systems since 1996 – in administration and 3rd-level support, as a consultant and technical architect, and in development.

Many problems in SAP landscapes arise where application, database and operating system meet. Because I work on all of these layers myself, I can analyse causes where they originate – not only where they become visible.

  • SAP systems

    SAP ERP and S/4HANA, BW, CRM, PI and Solution Manager – installation, operation, upgrade and migration.

  • Databases

    SAP HANA as well as Oracle, DB2, Informix and MaxDB – including multi-terabyte databases, with backup and recovery strategies.

  • Operating systems

    Linux (SUSE, Red Hat), AIX and other Unix systems, Windows and OS/400.

  • Development & automation

    ABAP, SQL and SQLScript for analysis and transformation; Python and shell scripts for monitoring and automation.

  • Data Migration & TransformationEnergy company

    Data migration from SAP ECC to S/4HANA

    Situation
    Business data from SAP ECC is to be transferred to a new S/4HANA system.
    Task
    Data model analysis, data transformation and migration.
    My contribution
    ABAP development for data analysis and transformation, SQL analyses and performance optimisation of the migration runs.

  • SAP HANAIT service provider

    Operation and performance of SAP HANA systems

    Situation
    SAP HANA systems, some with XSA, run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and have to be operated reliably.
    Task
    Administration, troubleshooting and performance optimisation of the HANA systems.
    My contribution
    Performance tuning and troubleshooting, encryption, backup and restore, automated Linux installation, and monitoring with Python and shell scripts.

  • SAP Basis & HANASeveral projects

    Migrations to SAP HANA and S/4HANA

    Situation
    ERP, CRM and BW systems run on Oracle or DB2 and are to be moved to SAP HANA – in some cases together with the move to S/4HANA.
    Task
    Planning and execution of the technical migration.
    My contribution
    Migrations with DMO (combined upgrade and migration), including Unicode conversion, and installation of the HANA databases.

  • SAP BasisPharmaceutical company

    Moving SAP landscapes to a new data centre

    Situation
    A pharmaceutical company’s SAP landscapes are relocated to a new data centre.
    Task
    Technical delivery as an engineer in the migration project.
    My contribution
    Migration of the PI landscapes, installation of BW, PI and Solution Manager, high availability with PowerHA, disaster recovery and SSL encryption.
