Working style

How I work

  • Directly with you

I work independently. The person you talk to is the person who does the work.

  • Design and delivery from one source

I analyse, plan and implement myself – from troubleshooting and configuration to writing my own scripts or ABAP programs.

  • Aligned with your team

I plan technical projects, present them and organise their implementation – on my own or as part of your project team.

  • Sharing knowledge

Where it is wanted, I pass on knowledge – for example in SAP Basis training sessions like those I have run for support teams.

Technical perspective

Following a problem across system boundaries

In SAP landscapes, a problem rarely shows up where it originates. Slow processing, an aborted migration run or a memory bottleneck can be caused by the application, the database, the operating system or the communication between them.

Because I have worked on all of these layers myself, I can follow a question to the place where it can be answered – instead of stopping at the edge of a single specialist area.

Questions that go beyond a single layer

  • Is an out-of-memory error caused by individual tables, by the memory configuration or by the load from the application?
  • Is a slow migration run a problem of the ABAP code, of SQL execution or of database resources?
  • Does a connection fail because of the SAP system, the encryption or the network?
  • At which layer can a recurring operational task be automated sensibly?

The layers I work on

SAP application
ABAP analysis and development, SQL trace and debugger
SAP Basis
Installation, upgrades, system copies, transport management, monitoring
Databases
SAP HANA, Oracle, DB2, Informix
Operating systems
Linux, AIX and other Unix systems, Windows, OS/400
Automation
Python, shell, Perl, SQL and SQLScript

Background

From SAP R/3 to S/4HANA

I started working with SAP in 1996, on the technical side: installing and administering SAP R/3, designing the network, and building an ABAP and C++ interface that transferred production data from manufacturing into SAP. Installations, upgrades and system copies on AIX, HP-UX, Windows NT and OS/400 followed.

For many years my focus was on SAP Basis, databases and platforms: 3rd-level support for IT service providers in banking and for outsourcing providers, performance tuning, upgrades, and homogeneous and heterogeneous system copies with Oracle, Informix and DB2. This also included high-availability solutions, moving complete SAP landscapes to a new data centre, and SAP Basis training for support teams.

With SAP HANA, the focus moved to the in-memory database: automated installation and administration, migrations of ERP, CRM and BW systems to HANA and S/4HANA, analysis of performance and memory problems, and operations on SUSE and Red Hat Linux.

In more recent projects I combine this experience with data migration and development: I move business data from SAP ECC to S/4HANA, develop ABAP programs for analysis, transformation, archiving and authorisation checks, and optimise SAP HANA performance.

Let’s talk about your project.

Send me a short note on what it is about – your system, your problem or your plans. A short description is enough for an initial conversation.
