Upgrades, system copies, platform changes and 3rd-level support – in classic Oracle and DB2 landscapes as well as on SAP HANA.

    Automated authorisation checks and archiving

    Situation
    In SAP ERP on SAP HANA, checks of user roles and authorisations and the archiving of documents are to be automated.
    Task
    ABAP development for the automation, plus performance tuning of the HANA database.
    My contribution
    ABAP programs for automated role and authorisation checks and for automated document archiving; SAP HANA performance tuning.

    Situation

    My contribution
    EHP8 upgrades and system copies, SAP HANA performance tuning and troubleshooting, monitoring with HANA Cockpit.

    EHP upgrade and platform change for ERP landscapes

    Situation
    Several ERP landscapes are to be upgraded to a new enhancement package and migrated to a newer Windows Server version.
    Task
    Planning and execution of the upgrade and migration, and setup of central Basis services.
    My contribution
    Upgrade from EHP4 to EHP6 in eleven system landscapes, migration from Windows 2003 to 2008, a central SLD concept, Solution Manager setup with EarlyWatch Alert, SSO and SSL.

    Moving SAP landscapes to a new data centre

    Situation
    A pharmaceutical company’s SAP landscapes are relocated to a new data centre.
    Task
    Technical delivery as an engineer in the migration project.
    My contribution
    Migration of the PI landscapes, installation of PI, BW, Solution Manager and BusinessObjects, transport management with CTS+, high availability with PowerHA, disaster recovery, SSL encryption and an automated Oracle installation.

    Situation
    An outsourcing provider runs SAP systems for a range of products – including APO, BW and CRM – on AIX with Oracle and DB2.
    Task
    3rd-level support, plus installation, upgrades and optimisation of SAP systems and databases.
    My contribution
    Error and workload analysis, Oracle and DB2 optimisation, point-in-time recovery and DR tests, an APO upgrade with Unicode migration, and a script-based Oracle upgrade.

    Situation
    SAP HANA systems, some with XSA, run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux in VMware environments.
    Task
    HANA administration, native HANA development and operations as HANA expert.
    My contribution
    Automated installation and updates of Red Hat Linux; SAP HANA installation, patches and updates; performance tuning and troubleshooting for HANA and XSA; encryption, backup and restore; monitoring with HANA Cockpit and Python and shell scripts.

    My contribution
    DMO migrations of CRM and ERP to SAP HANA and of ERP to S/4HANA; automated SUSE Linux installation, HANA installation and updates, performance tuning, troubleshooting and script-based monitoring.

    My contribution
    HANA upgrade, analysis and resolution of the out-of-memory situations, performance analysis and installation of the Fiori server.

    Business data from SAP ECC is to be transferred to a new S/4HANA system.
    Task
    Data model analysis, data transformation and migration.
    My contribution
    ABAP development for data analysis and transformation, SQL analyses and performance optimisation of the migration runs.

    Situation
    An IT service provider runs SAP R/3, BW and other NetWeaver systems for several clients.
    Task
    3rd-level support, plus data loading and data modelling in SAP Business Warehouse.
    My contribution
    Extraction from R/3 and third-party systems via LSMW, XI, XML and batch input, building InfoCubes, planning and optimising the data load processes; alongside this, installations, upgrades, system copies and performance tuning.

    Transferring production data into SAP

    Situation

    My contribution
    SAP installation and administration, network design, and an interface in ABAP and C++ for transferring the production data into SAP.

Across system boundaries

Projects rarely involve just one layer

Many of these projects span everything from the SAP application down to the operating system. An overview of what I took on at each layer:

The focus has shifted; the technical foundation has remained.

  1. Technical foundations

    Started in 1996 with installing and administering SAP R/3 and building an ABAP and C++ interface for production data.

  2. Basis, databases and platforms

    3rd-level support, upgrades, system copies and OS/DB migrations on AIX, OS/400, Linux and Windows with Oracle, Informix and DB2.

  3. SAP HANA

    Automated installation and administration, migrations to HANA and S/4HANA, memory and performance analysis, operations on Linux.

  4. Data migration and development

    In more recent projects: data migration from SAP ECC to S/4HANA and ABAP development for analysis, transformation and automation.
